action-packed summer!

DUDE!  This summer has been crazy!  We just left Boston this weekend and in the three days we visited one friend had her baby and two couples got engaged!  YAY!

I better start this recap since this summer is flying by.
Wayne graduated.  Yay MBA!  My sugar momma days will be over soon.  And that day we drove from Boston to Philly (approx 6 hrs, 300 miles)

And then Olivia finished at Wharton.  She took care of business...literally!

Now she has to tackle nursing and she'll be all set at UPenn.

We ate at Tony Luke's in Philly:

drove back to Boston (another 300 miles) to work for, like, a day.

And then that Friday we flew out to Houston (1800 miles) for J&S's wedding.  But not without a party:

(the present is for me cuz I won one of the games.  I beat the bride by 1 point!  I figure it's not bad karma if I'm already married.)

Then we saw a super large armadillo whom leylola befriended (they're holding hands):

And then we witnessed the union of J&S!

(Alvin and I totally egged them on during cake cutting- she smeared frosting all over his face!  So we used our newfound power to make them intertwine arms for champagne.)
Major happiness!  We've gotten to hang out with them since they got married- it's weird how fast things change in a year!  I'm glad they're back in Boston.

Wayne's love for yelp.com was cemented after we ate at The Breakfast Klub:

I got a waffle and grilled catfish (mmmm) and Wayne split biscuits and gravy with chiuy and then had chicken and waffles to himself.  I think Southern food is a newfound love for our inner fatties...which is totally manifesting itself to our outer fattiness, too.  Gotta find a gym in Hartford!

Last food stop in Houston: Juice Box for shaved ice, courtesy of Larry's recommendation.  They had the condensed milk ice which was really delicious and refreshing.

We flew back to Boston armed with Lee's Sandwiches (1800 miles), and then got ready for a Memorial Day BBQ for our Charis friends on Monday.  I think 30 people played softball and roughly 60+ people came for the BBQ.  The menu included chili, ribs, steak, brats, hot dogs, veggies, pulled pork, chips, and a surprise birthday cake for Charissa.  Tired feet aside, I really liked having a lot of people over!  I think I've adopted my parents' "the more the merrier" attitude.  It was fun seeing everyone, and it was super fun watching all the kids play in the backyard.

Thus the end of May.  Up next: June!  Possibly in several parts.  June was pretty stinkin' exciting.

argh!!

Xanga isn't uploading my photos! I somehow got this one through (Wayne's graduation, hurrah!), but supposedly the server is down. AND after I emailed support@xanga.net I got a Mail Delivery subsystem notice that the email didn't go through. BOOOO. Facebook it is, then.

the scoop

FAQ's for the curious:

Why are you moving to Hartford, Connecticut?
Wayne got a job at Cigna (health insurance) in Hartford.  He received the offer in September but he had to finish his MBA program first.  Now that he's done, we're getting ready to go.

Really?  Connecticut?
Yes.  Connecticut.  If it's any consolation I've gone so far east that I'm slowly making my way back to the west.

When do you move?
We're gonna move in July 1, but we'll probably be back in Boston for a couple more weekends afterwards to hang out.

Did you find a place yet?
We put down a deposit for a place in West Hartford, which is really close to my work and only 10 minutes to Wayne's work.  2 bedrooms= you can visit!

Are you renting or buying a place?
We're renting for now, but we might consider buying in the future.  We wanted to get a better sense of the neighborhoods before we commit to anything.

How long are you going to be there?
Indefinitely.  Wayne's program lasts at least 4-5 years, and hopefully after 2 years or so we'll have a better idea of whether or not we'll stay.  If he really likes the company and they really like him then it's likely we'll stay for quite awhile.

Did you find a job yet?
I did!  After a couple months of searching I accepted a position on a medical telemetry floor at St. Francis Hospital.  I'll pretty much be doing the same thing I do now except I won't have surgical patients anymore.

Are you excited?
I'm not quite there yet.  Wayne phrased it well: when we're in Hartford we're excited about being in a new place, but when we're in Boston we don't want to leave.  We have such a great community here, so it's hard to say goodbye.

How far is Hartford from Boston?
It's roughly 1 1/2 hours from Boston, 2 hours from NYC.  If you visit us in Hartford we could take you on day trips to both cities!

Did you tell your work that you're leaving?
Yup- gave three week's notice.  My last day is this Friday, June 5.  I feel so blessed because everyone's been really encouraging and sweet.  I was blessed to work with such a great group of people.

What are you gonna do between now and July?
We'll be traveling to California for Philip/Chrissie/Dianne's graduations, and then we'll be visiting our friends in Hawaii (Oahu and Kauai)!  We'll also be traveling to Ithaca for a wedding right before we leave.

When are you gonna have babies?
We want to be settled in Hartford before we start trying, so maybe in a year or so.  I'd like to have a supportive community figured out before I try to figure out the whole parenting thing (God-willing!)

Are you ever going to move back to California?
California is always an option, but not in the near future.  We'll have to see what life brings us.  Wayne's family is in Boston, so we have incentive to stay in the East Coast, too.

Can we visit you in Hartford?
I'm just kidding.  No one really asks this question.  But you are more than welcome to visit us in Hartford!

totally clueless

I've learned that I have no idea what's going to happen in my life next.  I've also learned that God has a really funny sense of humor.

Sophomore year of college I was visiting my boyfriend at UPenn.  We were walking across the street on our way back to his dorm and he asked me about one of my guy friends at WashU.  "Do you like him?" he asked.  "What!?" I responded.  "No.  Wayne is just a friend.  I can't see him as more than that."
And of course, now I'm married to Wayne. We crossed that very same street in Philadelphia this weekend when we went to Olivia's Wharton graduation.

Right before I started dating Wayne I talked to my brother to see if he was okay with the idea.  I guess it wasn't necessary to do that, but I wanted his blessing since he had such a hard time with my previous relationship.  Luckily Adam had gotten a chance to know Wayne since we all had a year of school together, but he proceeded to interrogate me anyway.
His last question: "If the Cardinals and the Red Sox played against each other in the World Series, who would you root for?"
"The Cardinals, of course!" I exclaimed.  "The Red Sox wouldn't make it to the World Series."
And sure enough, the Cardinals and Red Sox played each other in the World Series that year.  I stayed true to my word and rooted for the Cardinals, but the Sox won.  Thank goodness for the 2006 WS win for the Cards or else my dad and brothers would still be bitter.

Most recently-
In the Fall of 2007 Wayne started an MBA program at Babson College.  Lots of companies were recruiting for summer internships that would lead to full-time positions, and Wayne went to a couple of info sessions to learn more.
One night he called me and mentioned this great program at Cigna (a health insurance company).  It was unique because it had a Financial Development Program, which meant that he'd get to rotate through different jobs within their finance department, and the ultimate goal was to train them to be managers.
"The only problem," he said, "is that it's in Hartford, Connecticut."
"Interesting," I replied.  "Well, we'll worry about that if it comes up.  I'm sure there are lots of opportunities in Boston."

I'm pretty sure you can see where this story goes.  After one engagement, one summer internship in Hartford, and one marriage, we are now on our way to Hartford, Connecticut.  Wayne received an offer from Cigna in September, and it was really too good to pass up.  He liked the program a lot, and there wasn't a comparable program in Boston.  Plus, jobs are scarce nowadays, so we were thankful that he was given such a great opportunity in the midst of a poor economy.  Wayne graduated this Saturday (yay!) and he'll find out his start date soon.

You'd think that I would catch on to the blatant foreshadowing, but I don't.  I'm almost certain that God uses these opportunities to remind me of who's in control (Him, obviously.)

an adventure

My husband loves me even though I'm a total nutcase.

Thursday night at 11pm we took a bus from South Station to NYC.

We didn't sleep well on the bus.  Probably because the bus driver was driving, like, 100 mph.

We got to NYC around 3, so we decided to check out the legend on 53rd and 6th:

Chicken and rice, baby!

After grabbing a well-past-midnight snack, we made our way to Rockefeller Center to wait in line.  In light rain.

We had three more hours until we got to see anything, so we watched an episode of The Wire and sat around.  Then a White Castle truck came to give out free hot dogs, bagels, donuts and brownies.

After 6am they let us line up- too bad we didn't have fan passes cuz we would have been right near the stage.

So...what did we see?  A live taping of the Today Show:

(Matt Lauer is wearing mutton chops someone gave him to promote the new Xmen movie.

And the reason we'd trek all the way to see the Today show?

No Doubt!  Back together after a five-year hiatus.

We were ridiculously tired, especially since we had to stand for so long.  Wayne was a total trooper though- didn't complain at all.

Unfortunately we didn't have a great view, but we got to see enough.

After three songs (Spiderwebs, Don't Speak, and It's My Life) the performance was over, so we made our way back to Chinatown for breakfast.

Noodles are good ALL the time.  Especially at 945am.

We took an 11am bus back to Boston and got back around 330pm.

Yes, we're crazy.  But we had fun.  And ate surprisingly well for an 8-hour stint in New York.
